Music Theory – Tones, Semitones & Accidentals

Basic intervals and accidentals with the guitar fretboard.

Semitone

E – F and B – C, are a semitone apart (only half a tone).

All other notes are a whole tone apart, that is 2 semitones.

The semitone is the smallest interval in music.

Tone

Equal to two semitones (e.g. C – D).

Sharp

Raises a note by one semitone.

Flat

Lowers a note by one semitone.

Double Sharp

Raises a note by two semitones.

Double Flat

Lowers a note by two semitones.

Natural

Cancels the previous accidental.
